Katakolon itself is a small fish village with few permanent inhabitants [about 600] which has been developed the past few years. A lot of shops have open in order to serve cruise passengers calling Katakolon but the main reason of visiting Katakolon is Ancient Olympia. If we would like to describe Katakolon town we should say that is formed by 3 parallel roads, streets :

The first one which is seaside is pedestrian and there are situated mostly tavernas, few restaurants, cafeterias and some souvenir shops. In this road you can relax just in front of the small fish port enjoy a coffee or an ouzo with view to the typical small fish boats, the sea and also take a picture from a distance of your cruise ship.

The second or main road of the small town of katakolon is the shopping street. There you can find several kind of shops: souvenir shops[mostly], Greek art shops [contemporary and ancient replicas, two mini markets, local products shops, an internet cafe, leather goods shops, handmade artifacts, Greek icons, a small shop with local and international press…

On the third and less frequented road you will find mostly houses as well as few shops, tavernas, a “kafeneion”[old school cafeteria] and a bakery. This street is nice for those who want to see beyond the tourist part of Katakolon, discover the charm and simplicity of this humble fish port and why not buy some recently baked bred.
